Case Study: A 78-year-old man was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma 3 months previously. The patient has not yet begun to receive chemotherapy and staging studies suggest a localized disorder. The lab results are below. WBC: 10.3 x 10e9/L Hgb: 12.0 g/dL Hct: 33.1% MCV: 81 fL PLT: 221 x 10e9/L Peripheral blood smear: normocytic, hypochromic RBCs without significant anisocytosis or poikilocytosis. A bone marrow biopsy was performed to rule out any involvement in the bone marrow by the malignant lymphoma. Examination of the bone marrow revealed no evidence of malignant lymphoma spread, and iron stains were performed.
