Internship Log
You are required to maintain a log in which you will enter your command activities, function, and tasks assigned while you are at your placement site. You are encouraged to record your observations, thoughts, feelings, confusions, enthusiasms and insights. These written logs will serve to fuel class discussions. Be sure to bring your internship log to each class when requested. Logs must be submitted electronically. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a reduction of your final grade.
Student-Professor Conferences: 1:1, meetings will be scheduled during the course of the semester, during scheduled class times. These meetings are to address the concerns and needs of the intern.
Term Paper - Must be submitted to "SafeAssign" on Blackboard.
A Term paper is required. The term paper must be 2,000 words (eight pages), double-spaced typed in Times New Roman font. The APA format of documentation shall be followed. The paper must contain a title page, a table-of-contents, and a bibliography.
The term paper should include, but not be limited to, the following:
Discussion about the command you are assigned to. you went to a jail visit riskers island AMKC last Friday discuss about

2. What is the total capacity of the jail?
3. Is the atmosphere professional?
4. Is there an overriding philosophy at the command?
5. What are the priorities?

Discuss some of the policies, procedures and practices you observed.
1. How policies are communicated,
2. Reactions to these policies by staff,
3. Jargon used in agency concerning procedures,
4. Is roll call effective?
- Describe the organizational structure of the command. Include:
- Key decision makers
- Types of specialized positions in the facility
- Recent changes in the organization and reasons for change,
- Chain of command,
Describe the command. Include:
1. Reasons why the incarcerated persons are assigned to your facility. Is it a specialized unit?
2. Are the incarcerated persons at your command difficult to deal with?
- Explain, and discuss specific examples.
- Discuss how anticipated problems and issues can be prevented. Did certain areas within the command have more issues than others?
- Discuss interpersonal communication skills and de-escalation techniques, give specific examples. Are they effective? What needs to change to reduce potential problems? Is the incarcerated population receiving their mandated services, ie, programs, meals, recreation, commissary?
- Are DOC policies effective? Which policies are not effective and how would you change them?
- Discuss your interaction with uniformed and non-uniformed staff. Are they approachable with questions ? Did they assist you? Is there peer pressure? Discuss the morale and camaraderie at the command. Did supervisors assist and guide you? Is the command leadership effective?
- Discuss your interaction with the incarcerated population.
- What was your most difficult challenge? How did you overcome that challenge?
- Evaluate yourself and your performance. Be specific about your experiences in the agency, both positive and negative. Was your pre-internship training at the Correction Academy effective? Discuss the extent of your learning at the Academy. Did it help you with your internship experience? Explain your role as a NYC correction officer cadet. Is networking important? Has your perspective regarding jails and incarcerated individuals changed? Has your perspective of correction officers changed? How valuable was this experience for you? Did this internship experience contribute to your overall growth as a person, a student and a future correction officer?
