Question: Autumn (they/them) is a 26-year-old gender queer pansexual who group up in a very religious community. They are single and do not engage in sex but engages in regular and casual consensual touch with strangers. Spending most of their life being taught very little about sex, other than that it was a sin, especially homosexuality, they have struggled with their sexuality throughout their adolescence and early adulthood. As they have matured and have recently figured out, they are gender queer, they are slowly beginning to explore their sexuality fighting the extreme guilt and shame they have from years of religious beliefs being ingrained into them. They are coming to therapy to help navigate their newfound gender and sexual identities. what are 3 considerations that you would make when working with this client (ethical, physiological, environmental, cultural, developmental, spiritual, etc.) to best meet this client's needs? What can you do in your clinical practice to reduce the potential discrimination that this client may face when they pursue treatment from other care providers who might be less compassionate of their identity and/or sexuality?
