Question: The goal of this assignment is two-fold. First, it is to help you think about how we can understand history when we are missing sources (we have lots of historical records from missions groups, but often significantly fewer from the people who are receiving the missionaries). Second, it is designed to help you think about the variety of missions and foreign influences (including from a wide variety of regions and religions) in different parts of Africa. Select one nation in Africa to address in this assignment. You may choose any nation you want, but keep in mind that some nations will be more difficult to address than others (for instance, if they ban outside mission groups). Select four mission groups to address. o At least one should be a Christian mission group. This is defined as a group holding to traditional orthodox Christian teachings. If you have questions about whether a mission group fits this category, feel free to ask your instructor. o At least one should be a non-Christian religious mission group. o At least one should a non-religions mission group. For each mission group, provide six specific elements. The goal is that, if someone reads your Missions Factbook and is inspired, they would easily be able to contact the group to support it or volunteer their services. o First-include relevant weblinks for the mission. This is probably the homepage for the mission group, but it could be a church link for the missionaries, etc. o Second--list relevant associations that will help to understand the mission. For instance, if a missions group is associated with a particular church, that can provide information about their theological perspectives; associations with groups focusing on agriculture or education can give you information about their purpose; etc. o Third--list important historical/other information about the mission. Knowing when/how/why a mission was created, or other information, can help you to understand their purpose and influences. o Fourth--list origin nation/address/related information for the mission. This can help us to understand the mission better: a mission from the United States may have a different relationship/focus/purpose than missions from China or Brazil or the United Kingdom. o Fifth--list the destination of the missionary work. If a mission group is only sending missionaries to one particular country, they are probably closely focused on the needs of that country. If the mission group sends to dozens of countries, it is probably not as closely focused on one country. This isn't not necessarily a problem, but it can make it more difficult for you to complete the assignment, particularly if all of your missions groups are very general. o Sixth--list the purpose and goals of the missions work. This will likely be the longest of the six sections. Make sure that you provide substantive information. Write an assessment essay based on the research into the four missions groups and based on the two scholarly sources you selected. Explain what the works of the missions groups tell us about the country itself. What can understanding the origin/purpose/etc. of the above missions groups help us to understand about the nation to which they are ministering? Does it point to specific needs? Specific issues? Specific skills/practices/habits/etc.? Explain what the mission group's work tells us about the nation/region.
