Aung San Suu Kyi is a leader of Myanmar's (aka Burma) National League for Democracy and has been held under house arrest for 15 of the last 25 years from 1989 until her release on November 13, 2010. It remains unclear how long she might keep her freedom this time, though she participated in semi-democratic elections in her country and has been elected to a congressional seat.

In her speech "Freedom from Fear" she says: "Fearlessness may be a gift, but perhaps more precious is the courage acquired through endeavor, courage that comes from cultivating the habit of refusing to let fear dictate one's actions, courage that could be described as 'grace under pressure'--grace which is renewed repeatedly in the face of harsh, unremitting pressure."

Why does she believe that even in harsh, cruel societies, courage will rise up? Can you think of an example of a person refusing to let fear dictate their actions? What can this mean for the War on Terror? This could be a person you know from your own life experience. Do you think Kyi's election is proof that this is true?
