Homework: Psychology
This homework is intended to prompt you to examine the ways in which gender-based attitudes and beliefs affect support for specific social policies. You will continue to examine the link between attitudes and behavior in your final project. For Written Homework 5, watch the TEDx Talk by David Buss on sexual conlflict and read the Mosley et al. article.
TEDx Talks. (2017, November 14). Sexual conflict in human mating | David Buss [Video]. YouTube.
Mosley, E. A, Anderson, B. A., Harris, L. H., Fleming, P. J., & Schultz, A. J. (2020). Attitudes toward abortion, social welfare programs, and gender roles in the U.S. and South Africa. Critical Public Health, 30(4), 441-456.
Write a paper that addresses the following:
A. Summarize the key assumptions and assertions of evolutionary theory. Discuss how evolutionary theorists explain gender differences in mate selection, jealousy, aggression (e.g., stalking), and dating.
B. Describe the ways in which attitudes and beliefs affect support for reproductive health policies such as access to abortion.
C. In preparation for your final homework, consider the ways in which biological, psychological (e.g. attitudes), and social factors (i.e. biopsychosocial) influence our support for social policies, programs, and laws.
D. In addition to shaping attitudes and support for access to abortion, how else might our beliefs about gender (e.g., gender-role ideology) affect perceptions of behaviors discussed in the Buss talk (e.g., stalking, intimate partner violence)? What can psychologists do to raise awareness about the connection between gender-based attitudes and beliefs and related behaviors?
