Question: Jethro was Moses' father-in-law and a high priest of Midian. Although Jethro isn't among the most well-known Biblical figures in Christian circles, he is a very important figure in Judaism and the Torah. Torah scholars point out that as a high priest of Midian, Jethro had leadership experience that directly benefited Moses in this passage. He is most well-known for establishing the judicial system that Moses adopted as a means of governing the people of Israel. It is worth noting that while Israel would go on to have numerous violent clashes with the Midianites, the author of Exodus still saw fit to credit the creation of Jewish judicial system to a Midianite high priest.
