Overview: This assignment is more "open-ended" than the previous homework assignments. As such, we hope you will pick a topic that is particularly interesting to you and present your work in a format that you will enjoy working on.
Instructions: For this assignment, you will pick a geologic event related to a type of hazard that is covered in the GLG 112 course to research further and you will then present your findings to your instructor.
You must pick an actual event (i.e. the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the 1993 Mississippi River floods, the 1925 Gros Ventre landslide, etc.). You will need to present ALL of the following information to receive full credit for this assignment:
• Name and describe your topic. What is it, when did it happen, and where did it take place? You must include a map or visual representation of where it occurred.
• How and why did it occur? What is the science behind it? Why did it happen? Was this a specific hazard related to just one location or does it occur elsewhere? Had it happened before or was it completely unexpected?
• Who was affected? Who was impacted by this event and how? What sort of problems did this present?
• What can be done about this type of event/hazard? How do people attempt to mitigate the risks associated with this type of hazard?
• What sources did you use? You must include a list of references (a minimum of two unique sources are required).
Part I: Choosing a Topic
It is strongly suggested that you pick a topic that you find particularly interesting. It may be something you learned about in class and want to explore further.
A different approach may be to choose a current event or other topic that has been in the news lately. Of course, you may also want to choose something related to where you are from. The choice of topic is completely up to you.
Simply choose and let your instructor know what you intend to research.
Part II: Presenting your Results
You may present your results in whatever manner you choose. It could be a written paper, a podcast, video clip, series of PowerPoint slides, poster, poem, song....you get the idea.
Basically, your results can be presented in any form that you can think of, but it must address EACH of the points listed above. However, your presentation method MUST be approved by your lab instructor in advance by the date listed in your syllabus.
