Discussion response Humanities

What benefits were used to entice men to participate in the Crusades? What types of recruitment tactics have been used in more recent wars? Are there any similarities?

John's response:

The benefits of early Crusades were not as clear as subsequent Crusades. Some of the benefits that leaders of those times "sold" to Crusaders was forgiveness of sin, to bring peace to the region, adventure, and the spoils of war.

Telling crusaders that their sins would be forgiven and that what they were doing was righteous seems to be a common theme throughout history. Christians (I consider myself one), will certainly tout their religion is one of peace. It is ironic that marching around the world killing and conquering people is a facet of a peaceful religion.

This righteous perspective, in my opinion, can be linked to the wars and conflict we see throughout the world to this day. We see some modern-day practitioners of Islam fighting Holy Wars were there seems to be a similar theme in which both sides feel righteous for what they are fighting for.

The same locations in the world are still fought for to this day. We like to think we have advanced spiritually and culturally as a society, but these history lessons are stark reminders that the same fights are still occurring at the same places for what seems the same reasons. I find this sad...
