Problem: Write a one-two-page personal response to the two stories you read this week: "Harrison Bergeron" and "The End of Firpo in the World." In your Response Paper this week, consider the variety of connections between stories. For example, "Harrison Bergeron" and "The End of Firpo in the World" are both about conformity and rebellion, as well as about the imagination. Both stories also have death in them. What can you say about some of these connections? What other connections do you see? You may also comment about the stories individually and/or explore how either uses the elements of fiction we learned about from "Seven Literary Elements." How does Vonnegut's ironic tone -- irony is when the stated meaning of a statement is the opposite of its intended meaning, such as if on a windy, rainy day you were to say, "What beautiful weather!" (unless you like wind and rain) -- work in "Harrison Bergeron? What kind of "unreliable narrator" do you think Cory is in Saunder's "The End of Firpo in the World"? It does not have to be written in academic essay form (with an introduction, thesis statement, body, and conclusion), does not have to be as unified a discussion as in a formal essay, and can written for the members of our class directly (unlike a formal essay, which is always written for a general audience that has not read the works you discuss).
