Question 3
Read the following case study and answer the questions to the best of your ability.
Maria is in the second semester of a counseling internship in an elementary school. She speaks Spanish and has earned the trust of many of the Spanish-speaking students. Her teacher has referred Rosa, a sixth grader who has stopped into Maria's office four times during the year, because Rosa seems unusually distracted. Rosa shares with Maria that she has a severe headache. It is evident to Maria that Rosa is in need of immediate attention.
When Rosa says her family cannot afford medical care, Maria contacts a low-cost community clinic and Rosa obtains the needed care. Rosa and her family become comfortable talking with Maria and they make great efforts to succeed in school. Soon she finds that she is setting aside much of her time for Rosa when in reality there are others who are much more deserving of her time and attention. Maria has a hard time refusing Rosa an appointment or setting limits to the duration of her sessions with her.
Six weeks before the end of the semester, Maria learns the family has undocumented status. The school district has a clearly written policy requiring personnel to immediately report any undocumented students. When a report is made, it is investigated, and undocumented students are then dismissed and dropped from the school rolls. Maria chooses not to discuss the matter with anyone as she does not want to upset the large number of immigrant population in the neighborhood, many of whom may be undocumented like Rosa. She is also aware of the disproportionately higher percentage of mental health cases in that population. Knowing the needs of the immigrant population, Maria wants to make a community intervention. She wants to assume an active role in mobilizing the resources within the community but is not sure of the kind of knowledge and skills she must acquire.
1. What is your assessment of Maria as a school counselor? What kind of advice would you give her?
2. What kinds of direct and indirect client services could Maria consider in her attempt at community intervention?
3. Since Maria wants to assume an active role in mobilizing the resources within her community, what knowledge and skills must she go about acquiring?
