Case Study: Mark is a new nurse on a medical-telemetry unit. His patient Juan is an 88-year-old Mexican male with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Juan's family is present during his hospitalization, taking turns spending time with him. At times, there are as many as 10 family members in the room, making it difficult for Mark to provide patient care. He complains to his charge nurse that the family is interfering with his care. The charge nurse asks Mark to consider the patient's culture in relation to health care. Mark replies, "His culture doesn't matter.
