One of the earliest records of a criminal investigation which led to the identification of a murderer was in the textbook The Washing Away of Wrongs by Sung Ts'u written in 1325. It is a very remarkable and detailed study with chapter titles such as "Decay of Corpses in the Four Seasons", "Murderous Injuries", and "Injuries Inflicted after Death by Insects, Rats, or Dogs."
In this case, a villager was found dead by the road, his clothing and belongings nearby. He had ten wounds on his body which seemed to be from a sickle blade.
question is: Are there any assumptions that can be made so far?
second story:
The investigator asked the victim's wife if her husband had any enemies. The woman replied that she was not aware of any enemies, but there was one man in the community that had come to her husband to borrow money. The men had discussed the matter, but money had not changed hands.
The investigator had all the sickles in the neighborhood brought to him. Everyone was told that if anyone did not turn in their sickle then they would be considered guilty and the investigation would center on that person. Seventy to eighty sickles were brought in.
question is: What do you think the next step should be?
third story:
The investigator had the sickles laid out on the ground. It was a hot day. Shortly afterward, flies began to circle and gather on one of the sickles.
question is: What assumption did the investigator make? Is he using inductive or deductive reasoning? How can you tell?
