Psychoanalytic and Adlerian Therapy
This week you read chapters 4, 5, and 6 which introduce you to two psychodynamic theories, Psychoanalytic and Adlerian Therapy, as well as an experiential and relationship-oriented theory, Existential Therapy.
As you begin to explore the various theories, keep in mind that there is no right or wrong theory or theoretical approach. At this stage in your training you are expected to become familiar with the various theoretical approaches by gaining an understanding of the philosophy or the major premises of each theory, the key concepts and terms associated with each, and some of the techniques and strategies associated with each theory. From this understanding you will begin to develop your own professional theoretical orientation that will guide your work with clients.
A good way to begin to explore the theories discussed in your textbook is to do a comparison and contrast as each theory is presented. There will be some aspects of each theory that resonate with you, and others aspects that you will not agree with at all. And guess what? It's okay.
For this week's discussion, please address the following:
1. What is your understanding of the similarities between Psychoanalytic theory, Adlerian theory, and Existential theory? Do not simply regurgitate what is in the textbook. Analyze the theories and share your understanding in your words.
2. What is your understanding of the major differences between Psychoanalytic, Adlerian, and Existential theory? Do not simply regurgitate what is in the textbook. Analyze the theories and share your understanding in your words.
3. What aspects of psychoanalytic theory, Adlerian theory, and Existential theory can you apply to your own personal growth?
4. Which theoretical perspective appeals to you more, and why?
