Problem: What aspects of quality of care is the patient capable of evaluating? We have touched on quality and perceptions of quality briefly. One way quality is being measured is through satisfaction surveys such as the HCAHPS survey following a hospital stay. (Remember: HCAHPS surveys are used to measure patient perceptions of hospital experiences. It is a national, standardized survey. ) The survey results are publicly reported on Hospital Compare. Reimbursement is based, at least in part, on the results of these satisfaction surveys. Do the questions on the survey measure quality? Is feeling good about care provided the same as having received quality care?
