Case Study: Kathi is a shy, socially awkward, and withdrawn six-year-old female child whom you wish to help become more social. She has no friends and the children at school constantly tease her because of her weight. She is not obese, just has not lost her baby fat, but does overeat to nurture herself. She tends to belittle herself and this too causes the children in her class to 'make fun' of her.
She often tries to stay in for recess by helping the primary grade teacher. Kathi catches the bus resulting with her leaving school early and arriving just on time for classes. Most of the children are from town and do not catch the bus. She takes the bus to her grandmother's house just outside of town to stay with her until her parents pick her up around seven o'clock. By the time she arrives home it is time for her to watch some TV and then off to bed.
Kathi is the only child of a professional working couple who are somewhat introverted themselves and her mother has a history of depression. Kathi's parents live in town but are new arrivals and have few social contacts. Kathi does very little over the weekends mostly staying home spending time with her parents.
Questions:
a) What areas of Kathi's life do you feel are contributing to her poor social skills? List 5 areas and prioritize them in terms of importance to the target behaviour (Appropriate Socialization). Some areas may be of equal importance.
b) Develop a task analysis for each one of the areas identified in question #1 above. These steps are to act as a guide for Kathi and other concerned parties (parents, teachers etc.) to direct her as she increases her skill levels.
