Emerging Adulthood Assignment
Why does it take so long to grow up today?
1. When taking into consideration the technology revolution that we have gone through we have seen a shift from a need of physical labor to a "knowledge economy" that requires education beyond high school. So with that in mind do you see that applying to yourself? How long do you believe that you will need to be in higher education to get to the start of the career that you would like to be?
2. Would you prefer to get married before or after your schooling? How about kids?
3. I found it interesting that in 1960 there were twice as many men as women in college, but today women are starting to enroll at higher rates than men are. The shift in thinking in how a man or woman approached their twenties has become very different. How do/did you see how your twenties are/were going to serve you in your own life? I was in school and didn't start my career until I was 28.
4. In response to the change of the youth movement - what are your views on becoming an adult? Is it something you are "resistant" to, worry about? Or are you ready and full steam ahead on that development? If you consider yourself to already be in young adulthood, how has your experience of it thus far been in comparison to the expectations you had (if you had any) prior to being in this phase of life.
5. I liked what he had to say about how it's not really our fault it takes us longer to enter adulthood compared to our parents and grandparents. What do you think? Is there any real downside to waiting to have a family, picking the right marriage partner at 30 instead of 20?..
6. What are your thoughts on the freedom that emerging adulthood has to offer? What would you like to do in these years that you may not be able to do in adulthood when responsibilities/being depended on by others becomes more of a priority?
