CASE STUDY:
Bill Sley has over thirty years of experience with ABC, Inc. Ken William, a new manager, was hired two months ago. Soon after taking over, Ken ordered the installation of CCTV cameras without informing the normal employees of the office. Three cameras-one at the front desk, one in the kitchen, and one on each corner of the main office-were put in place.
Bill visited Ken. Evidently, Ken believed he had a legal right to monitor his employees via CCTV. Just as I was leaving his office, he added that he would be listening in on phone calls for work-related purposes using an audio system that was being built.
Greg, Bill's brother-in-law who is presently employed by a law company, advised Bill that companies shouldn't continuously record video unless it is necessary for security and shouldn't utilize CCTV in a private location like the staff kitchen. Greg was informed by Bill that he did not understand how Ken's use of CCTV and audio recording complied with the law. There has never been a situation when staff needed to be watched via CCTV. Additionally, call monitoring appeared to be pointless because they mostly utilized the phones to make calls to clients and other departments inside the company.
