To many people, a trip to the zoo or aquarium is a fun day out for the family. Visiting a zoo is a chance for many people to see exotic animals they would otherwise be unable to see. Recently a number of documentary films have shown some of the issues associated with zoos and aquaria, Blackfish about Sea World comes to mind. I want you to watch this video about the "National Zoo" linked below.

Consider, many zoos justify keeping wild animals in captivity on the grounds that it contributes to conservation, research, education and recreation. Breeding animals in captivity so they don't become extinct. Zoos also work out in the wild conserving animals in their natural habitats. Zoos often claim they breed animals to ensure a secure population that could one day be used to return a species to the wild. Based on our lessons this week and research, what are your thoughts about these claims and whether zoos and aquaria are bad. Why or why not?
