1) Although not mandatory, Joint Commission (JCAHO) is what is used for funding and reimbursements in hospitals. In order to get reimbursed from Medicare and Medicaid, you must have JCAHO accreditation. Without it, hospitals would get no reimbursements from those two, and the potential for bankruptcy is high. Medicare is one of the biggest revenues for hospitals! It is also public knowledge for whether or not the hospital was accredited or denied the certification. In my own thoughts, as a patient, I would not want to go to a facility I know isn't passing. Since JCAHO has the safety and quality in the prime focus, it would make sense to seek those facilities out over unaccredited ones!

2) The requirement for a survey actually had my jaw hit the floor! I did not realize that the facility had to pay for them to come survey. And to pay all the amenities for the 5 staff that are surveying! That includes airfare, lodging, meals for the days there. I assumed the whole time that that was part of the responsibility of the JCAHO company as a whole. One of the "perks" to working for them would be the travel expenses. I never would have thought the company getting the survey paid, and that is on TOP of the $46,000 it costs for the survey alone! My jaw is still hanging! There are no other requirements needed to have them come survey the facility. Once they come, they would typically return within the 3 year mark.

After read the above, what are your thoughts about the pricing for JCAHO services? why is JCAHO beneficial for hospitals regarding funding?
