Assignment:
After viewing Mr. Jake's video, please answer these questions:
1) Jake talked about his lengthy stay in the hospital. As a nurse caring for someone who has a lengthy stay in the hospital, what challenges do you expect to face and what nursing interventions can you do to prevent those challenges from spiraling out of control? What are your priority assessments with an amputation?
2) Jake talked about infection and hygiene with his stumps. Discuss nursing priorities that you would have focused on back then when he was hospitalized and priorities you would worry about now if he was admitted to the hospital 10 years post-op?
3) Jake talked about how he needed a strong support system to get him through his injuries. If you were Jake's support person initially after the accident, what could you do to help Jake through his injuries? What community based nursing interventions should be considered (ex: support groups, therapy, wound care, etc...) and community based barriers (perception, accessibility, financial concerns)?
4) Imagine you are caring for someone who received an amputation and is now being discharged. Identify and explain three nursing areas that you will focus on during their discharge instructions.
5) What adaptive device or tool (besides his prosthetics) did you find the interesting? Such as zipper on his pants, accessibility around his house, using a different mode of transportation.
6) Jake suffered from a TBI (traumatic brain injury). What assessments would you perform on him in the clinic or hospital setting to see what residual effects are still lingering?
7) Any other questions you have that were not answered by Jake.
