Case: Dan, a 49-year-old man presents to ED after cutting his thumb 2/7 ago while attaching an accessory to one of his mowers. His thumb is swollen and throbbing, and yellowish-white pus is oozing out of the injured area. He also has two red tracks going up the inside of his forearm. He is complaining of 'chills' and nausea. On assessment Dan's temperature is 39.7ºC. He appears flushed, with a pulse of 125bpm and a blood pressure of 100/60 mm Hg. (His normal BP is 145/85 mm Hg.) There are no other remarkable findings on physical examination.
