Case Study: For Activity 1.6, I want you to start constructing your philosophy of education as you continue to evolve as an aspiring educator. I have provided the section headers to guide you at this point. All questions do not have to be answered, but many should be. Please be thoughtful and justifiable. This is your creed. We will evolve this as you go through this course. I am not looking for perfection and I am not here to judge your philosophy. I am here to guide you, to challenge you, and to assist you. Think about your responses in a way that... "I believe... because .... and by doing so...(the results/implications/effects) will be..." I have provided many guiding questions below. Please get as many of your ideas down as you can.

Questions:

  • Introduction - Provide a brief introduction of who you are and why you are choosing to be an educator.
  • Educational Goals, Methods, and Justifications - What are your ideals that guide you? What are your educational goals for the youth of our society? For the adults of our society? Do you believe that all people should be prepared to go to college, or just some? Please explain and justify. What is the difference between schooling, training, and education? Should all members of society be educated or just some? What should be the individual or social cost of education? Which methods should be taken for schooling and education?
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions - What knowledge, skills, and dispositions do we want students to know, do, and carry? Why? Who/what is being privileged over the other in each of these beliefs? What is the relationship between being the ideal citizen and the educational experience? What determines these descripitons?
  • Funding of Education - Who should fund education and to what extent? Please elaborate and justify your stance. What is the relationship between differential school funding and democracy?
  • Student groups - What are the general student groups in the schools that you have went to and/or have worked in/observed in? How was each group treated and represented? Was there disproportionate access to any groups? What is your stance on accessibility differences between financially wealthy and financially poor students? Between students from racially, ethnically, gender, and sexually diverse students? Between students with various abilities and disabilities that they face? What is the difference in educational goals between the students in general education tracks versus those in advanced tracks? What is your justification for each of these?
  • Socio-politically - Jefferson wanted to develop students' human capacities for rationality, critical thinking, right action, happiness, and a republican democracy. What do you think should be the focus (or not) of the education system in developing citizenry?
