Our hot buttons can impact the way we work with children and their families. Part of the work that we do requires us to be reflective. Being able to reflect on your hot buttons will help you gain a deeper understanding of why those particular behaviors bother you. Many times our buttons come from past experiences. Were you not allowed to whine? Did you have to eat all of the food on your plate because you had food insecurities growing up? There are many things and behaviors that can trigger how we act. We should try to adopt the mind frame that the children and/or families are doing the best that they can with what they have. In the case of children, the behaviors that we consider challenging may have worked for them to get their needs met. For parents, they are only doing the best they can with what they have experienced in their lives. When we look at a different perspective, it can help us be in a better place to understand children and their families. For this discussion, please answer the questions below:

• What are your "hot buttons" in challenging moments with children?  How can you strengthen your ability to respond to situations with a calm, clear mind?
• What views do you have of the children's skills and competencies? In what ways do you need to transform your view of children to see them in a more positive light?
