1) What are the main similarities and differences between Amazon and Walmart's approaches to address climate change? How do these reflect their differing business models?
2) Did the U.S. leaving the Paris Agreement represent an opportunity for big businesses to step up to the challenge of tackling climate change? How well do you think Amazon and Walmart have met this? What impacts do you think President Joe Biden's reentry of the U.S. to the Paris Agreement will have on Walmart, Amazon, and other companies?
3) Is it legitimate for Walmart to require the company's suppliers to adopt sustainability practices? How can Walmart leverage its buying power and give suppliers the incentive to innovate?
4) Should Amazon disclose more information regarding the company's carbon emissions, following Amazon's employees' requests? Review Amazon's most recent ESG Report (and review the carbon emissions data they provide. Does their explanation of how they account for emissions meet a standard that makes sense given other options available for credible reporting?
5) The two key components of a credible ESG report are "openness and honesty", and "credibility through assurance". Skim WalMart's most recent ESG report and see if you can find evidence of either of these two factors. Report out your findings, and then based on those findings suggest whether WalMart's report meets a good standard or if not, what changes should they make?
