Case: Jill is an 18-year-old girl who enjoys playing the flute in the local orchestra, attending local sporting events, and also singing in the church choir. Jill has recently been diagnosed with bipolar. She feels relieved about this as it explains why she experiences such terrible lows that are accompanied by long periods of absences from the communities that she loves. Jill's GP refers her to a care coordination service, and she is assigned Zoe as her care coordinator.
Jill really likes Zoe as she feels she can talk to her about anything. Zoe often has to explain to Jill that she doesn't have the specialty skills required to help Jill to manage her moods and negative thoughts, and that she can't personally give her all the advice and support that she requires. Zoe tries to maintain healthy boundaries with Jill by helping her to identify who the important people are in her own care network.
By identifying the natural support from her friends and family Jill begins to understand how important it is for her to participate in things she enjoys and to strengthen the resilience and capacity of her network so that all of her supports don't fall through when she needs them most. Zoe explains to Jill that one of her main roles is to provide Jill with the information and resources she needs to empower her to drive her own recovery. Zoe also tries to support Jill by upholding the rights that Jill has as a mental health service user, such as her right to privacy, confidentiality, and a discrimination free service.
Question 1: Briefly outline the rights and responsibilities of Zoe, Zoe's employer, and Jill in this situation.
Question 2: What are two work role limitations that Zoe needs to consider in this situation?
Question 3: Give two examples of how Zoe could help Jill expand or strengthen her care network and increase her community participation.
Question 4: What support or information could Zoe provide to help Jill uphold her rights and build resilience and capacity in her network?
