Question: Determine whether you would approve or encourage them to revise their informal assessment plan.
What are two reasons why you would approve it or encourage them to revise it?
Case Study: As the school year begins, I have assessment plans for the upcoming middle schoolers entering my classroom.
The informal assessment tools I will use more often this year include anecdotal notes, memos, and checklists. With anecdotal notes, I will be able to document in detail descriptions of the behaviors and skills of specific students individually or as a whole. I can also add memos where something significant warrants shorter, more detailed notes on the side. Checklists are quick, easy, and direct, so I will use those to my benefit when tracking specific tasks and skills with the students in various social, emotional, or cognitive areas.
Observation is a tool that is used consistently in my room. It is the most accessible and practical assessment tool to use. I can make a checklist of specific behaviors or actions to observe before the students enter my room so I can understand what I intend to watch for. While attending, I take internal notes or jot them down for further, more specific use. If I observe a student or groups of students struggling with content, I can talk them through it and make notes afterward to assess further.
While I will utilize portfolios during specific times of the school year, I will not rely heavily upon them as a continual assessment tool. Portfolios show an accurate depiction of a student's growth, as well as their strengths and weaknesses from work samples. Still, they are more beneficial for progress over some time- not for continuous use throughout the school year. I will, however, be able to pull specific samples from the portfolio when it is needed to determine weak areas that need further focus from the student to build development in that area.
