Question 1. What are some of the harmful stereotypes you have heard associated with men of color? And specifically, Asian American men? Where have you seen these stereotypes circulated? (TV, films, podcasts, etc?)

Question 2. What were two facts you learned while watching The Slanted Screen and what are two questions you have about that film? (If you've seen TV & films that claim to destroy old stereotypes, like Cowboy Bebop, Kung Fu (the 2021-2022 version), Kim's Convenience, iZombie, Lovebirds, Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Crazy Rich Asians or Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings, etc., I'd be interested in learning how those might add to the conversation. Or do they just reiterate old Orientalist stereotypes of the geek, the wise master, the monk, the hypersexual villain?)

Also, yes, Dune (all versions!) is Orientalist AF!

3. In Slaying the Dragon Reloaded, Dr. Sylvia Chan Malik argues that as Asian American men have gained some agency/control over their own stories and narratives, they seem the replicate the same sorts of silencing of women that other kinds of narratives do. In other words, there has historically been the realities of men of color critiquing racism and classism, but are not critical of misogyny and patriarchy, because that has been one way to gain power. How do you make sense of her argument? In other words, why are some men okay with critiquing racism, but not their own misogyny?

4. What were your reactions to Dr. Celine Shimizu's arguments on Asian American masculinity? What about the NY Times piece on Asian American comedians breaking the stereotype? Quote and cite as needed.
