The Sobel family has contacted you to schedule a family therapy appointment. Over the phone, Ms. Sobel tells you that the family has recently moved from Sitka, Alaska to their new home in Los Angeles, California. Mr. and Ms. Sobel have two boys, ages ten and twelve. Since their move three months ago, the boys have been defiant and uncooperative, and constant arguments seem to be taking place with the children and parents. Ms. Sobel tells you that everyone used to get along just fine in Alaska and that she feels like a switch has suddenly been turned on for family conflict. She hopes that her family can return to being "kind and loving" toward one another. During the initial intake with the Sobel family, you learn that the boys were given a lot of freedom and independence in Sitka. Because they realized that they were largely self-sufficient, they were quick to take care of their chores and other family responsibilities without being asked. Living in Los Angeles, they are not allowed to go anywhere without supervision.
