Darien Fisher is a 12-year-old boy you see in the ER because he was brought to the hospital by ambulance after having a tonic-clonic seizure at basketball practice. His parents are divorced, so Darien lives with his mother and two younger brothers in a trailer park during weekdays. On the weekend, he lives with his father on a houseboat.
The ER physician asked Mrs. Fisher for permission to do a lumbar puncture on Darien but she refused because she remembered what a terrible headache she had after receiving spinal anesthesia for Darien's birth.
