Case Study: The Civil Rights Movement
The civil rights movement was one of the large political movements in the United States to put an end to racial discrimination against African American people. In this paper, I will be discussing different events, strategies used, social and political challenges, gender relations and differences, leaders of this movement, violence, white supremacy, and lastly the importance of the history of the civil rights movement. The purpose of this paper is to learn different aspects of this movement and what it took for African American people to get their rights in this country. The movement was first established during the 1950s. During the civil rights movement, African Americans chose the movement to be a non-violent movement. African American people protested non-violently but they had to resist violence from white American people during the movement. This movement had many major events and those events helped in shaping the rights, and equality that African American people achieved as an outcome.
The civil rights movement started in the 1950s. Events like the Brown vs. Board case, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott were the initiative of this movement. Brown vs. Board case fought to put an end to segregating schools in America. That case fought for the rights of colored children who were getting discriminated against in schools. The case succeeded in getting equal rights in education. After the Brown vs. Board case, many other cases were opened for different rights that African American people didn't receive. I believe that fighting non-violently was one of the greatest strategies used by African American people. Rosa Parks, African American woman who fought for equal rights to seating in the public bus. This event was named The Montgomery bus boycott. "The success of the boycott's first day and the conviction of Mrs. Parks made it clear that the boycott would continue, at least until the blacks received conciliatory overtures from the city"(Thronton.2014). This shows that Rosa parks for determined to fight for equal rights for African American people. These events had a large contribution to the civil rights movement's history.
Many leaders were part of this movement and contributed to the fight for the rights of African American people. Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Rosa Parks, W.E.B Du Bois, Dorothy heights, and many more. These people had a great impact on the civil rights movement. They fought for the African American people's rights and used their strategies to achieve what they wanted.
Gender relations and differences also impacted the civil rights movement. African American women had to fight for their rights in a society full of gender norms. They wanted to contribute a lot more than we know in the civil rights movement, but they were held back because of their gender. "The systematic incorporation of gender along with race into studying the civil rights movement helps us to better understand how social movements, in general, are influenced by the intersecting hierarchies of power and domination"(Taylor1999, 8). Men dominated women when making decision, in work, getting higher education and many other things. Women had one job which was to take care of the family.
