For this assignment, read Goldsmith's poem "The Deserted Village"(note the change from the syllabus). You will also need to read the background to Goldsmith, as usual, and will be familiar perhaps with Auburn, AL as having been named for this fictitious town that scholars and critics have variously identified as either in England or Ireland. Goldsmith's poem is written in heroic couplets, like so many poems of the neo-classical period in the early 18th C. But the tone of this poem is decidedly "romantic", for it identifies the purity of simple life in villages as more ideal than the newly emerging world of wealth and luxury being experienced in British culture.
Question 1: What are the virtues that Goldsmith identifies with his nostalgic recollections of the village he lived in as a youth?
Question 2: Who are the "heroes" of that forgotten world, and what makes them heroic?
Question 3: What are the causes that the speaker attributes to the village being deserted?
Question 4: When you look at all of the small towns throughout GA and the rest of the US that have been "deserted" since the mid-20th C, what similar influences do you find?
