AJP Taylor makes an argument re: the origins of the Second World War in Europe. You have already read articles on this particular war and Taylor's argument is considered a shocking historical revision (in 1961) that still seems controversial to some now in the 21st century.

Write an essay that does the following:

Makes a clear and precise argument early in the paper

Uses a clear and precise to thesis statement (be explicit: "This paper argues...." or "In this paper, I argue..." etc.)

Addresses the question directly (write about what is expected)

Is approximately 5-6 pages (about 1600 words) double spaced, 12 point font, normal margins

All papers MUST have a cover page with your name, date, title. Cover page doesn't count for length of the paper

Cite all direct and paraphrased ideas. Footnotes are the best way to do this. Endnotes are not permitted.

All papers will address the following prompt:

Given what we know about why states and people commit to war, given what you have read about WWII, and given AJP Taylor's argument, what ultimately caused Europe to be engulfed in a World War starting in 1939?

Address this question as Taylor does; what are the various explanations and how does Taylor's fit...and is it ultimately satisfying vs. the other arguments you have read in this class.

You are essentially writing an evaluation of Taylor's argument and using your understanding of his book, as well as the arguments of Hughes, Vasquez, Hitler, and James Fearon.
