Aligning with our Essay (on a different work by Frederick Douglass, his 'Narrative') this analysis focuses on two documents that speak to different facets of the nature and impact of slavery in the United States. The Alabama Slave Codes highlight how the legal codes in southern states impacted Alabaman society more broadly, while Frederick Douglass' seminal speech is one of the most outstanding works of oration of the 19th century, and speaks to the hypocrisy of celebrating freedom while slavery was still practices across the United States. Read the two documents and answer the question below, with each response being between 3 and 5 sentences.
1] What are the type of restrictions that the Slave Codes place on free whites and free blacks in Alabama? In what ways does the maintenance of slavery effect the liberties of free citizens?
2] Why/how does Douglass use the themes of the Declaration of American Independence and the 4th of July in his speech to support his arguments/assertions? How effective/persuasive did you think this speech was/is?
