  • Merchant (2012) theorizes that social capital gained from social networking sites (SNSs) can be mobilized to help individuals achieve personal goals, but given that this practice usually creates social divisions with traditional social networks (e.g. face to face with family, friends, classmates) increased engagement with SNSs are less likely to bridge social capital between the two worlds.
