Sociological Discussion Examples
Study these two examples showing the difference between superficial and deep sociological discussions. What sociological perspectives or imagination can you spot in the deep discussion?
Superficial Discussion
Jane: No way would I work hard if I knew that was going to happen! Are you crazy?
John: No kidding. Wouldn't that be awesome though?
Jane: LOL. Think of all those suckers who work so hard for nothing.
Deep Discussion
Jane: It would be interesting to see what happened when you strip away rewards and privileges from hard work. I think the structural functionalists would say that our society would fall apart.
John: I think you are right, but what about the social conflict theorists? I think they would be happy that everyone gets equal rewards.
Jane: I don't know about. Is that what they are really saying? Or are they saying that it is access to getting into school in the first place that we need to make equal and that hard work should be rewarded? Now I am confused. Can anyone help me make sense of this?
