Assignment:
Now that you have learned how to begin decoding social constructs, can you think of one other social construct that has created harmful effects through normativity? Even something as seemingly innocuous as fashion can make it, creating 'types' with tropes attached to them, for example 'cool' kids can be associated with tropes like the manic pixie dream girl or the depressive nightmare boy, whereas nerds and geeks can be associated with being obsessive about something particular like gaming or reading. And, of course, they are assumed to wear specific kinds of clothes associated with these tropes.
For this activity, think of a couple of examples from popular media that uses fashion and tropes such as the ones described here. Write them down.
What are the social constructs embedded in these?
Are they useful, harmful, or both? Choose one and decode it in detail, using the three criteria we used for critical evaluation:
1) What are some of the ideas and ideals portrayed in this meme?
2) What are the material components related to these ideas and ideals? In other words, what kinds of organisations and institutions help to spread them?
3) What are some of the effects that these ideas and ideals have had - and continue to have - in our societies?
