Discourse Analysis Paper Instructions -

Purpose: In this paper you will demonstrate your ability to analyse texts (spoken or written) in terms of the analytic concepts we have discussed or you have become familiar with through extra reading.

Specifics

• Make sure to define and cite each concept you use. Emphasize the concepts that enable you to do a more thoughtful, interesting paper.
• A strong paper will provide persuasive discursive evidence for the claims that are being made. Give examples that illustrate the points you are making. For example, if you assert that certain participants are presented as having a more agentive role than others, describe and explain what the agency indicators are. The paper is to be 8-10 typed double-spaced pages and use 1-inch margins and 12 point font.
• Make sure to proofread your paper carefully before turning it in.
• Use APA style.

Recommended structure for the paper

Introduction (0.5-1 page)

• Purpose of paper
• What discursive practices you are analysing (introduce the data)
• Your analytic focus (what concepts will you be using?).
• Preview of the parts of the paper ("I will first do X, then I'll do Y...
• Finally, I will conclude by pointing out Z...").

Analysis (4-5 pages)

• Present at least three data segments and make analytic claims about them
• Explain what your claims illustrate

Discussion (2-3 pages)

• Evaluate the relationship between your data and discursive practices you were able to illustrate
• Consider the implications of this finding (i.e., answer the "So what?" of your findings)
• Consider the limitations to your findings

Conclusion (0.5-1 pages)

• Summarise your argument and key points.
• State any final thoughts and tie up any loose ends.

General Expectations

Papers are expected to be submitted on time. Late papers will be accepted for up to a week but will be penalised 3 points for each additional day of the week that they are late (i.e., 3, 6, 9, etc.).

Each paper will be evaluated on the detail, reasonableness, and insight of the analysis (the primary criteria) and the quality of the paper's writing (a secondary criterion). I will specifically look at the following items as I evaluate your essay:

• Specific, clear, interesting claim.
• Claim is well supported by findings in analysis.
• Data excerpts are appropriate, helpful in making your argument, and well explained.
• Analytic concepts are defined and used appropriately.
• Assertions, evaluations, etc. are sufficiently unpacked/explained.
• Paper length meets expectations.
• Paper is well organised and formatted (using APA conventions).
• Spelling, grammar, style, and other features of the writing are appropriate.
