Case Study: Please watch this TedTalk by Canwen Xu, Titled "I Am Not Your Asian Stereotype" (2016). Pay attention to how those comments that she describes from people who are racist, not racist, or clueless affect her? Canwen Xu has experienced many situations where people look at her outward appearance and make assumptions. These assumptions were hurtful because it made her feel like she didn't belong (can you relate?) Which then led to Canwen trying to move as far away as she could from her identity as an Asian American. This causes Canwen to lose a sense of who she is.

Questions:

  • What are the roles of avowal and ascription in the process of identity formation? You might want to define these terms.
  • How do the identities that are ascribed to a person affect how they (or you) communicate with others?
  • What happens when we are wrong in the identity ascription we assign a person?
  • Have you had a situation where you mistakenly assigned an identity to someone else? Please describe that situation for us.
  • (By the way, no judging here, we are all on our journey of becoming more ethical intercultural communicators. Making an identity mistake and how we handle that mistake is a part of how we grow and learn to be in this world).
