Ms. Lola Burns delivered food for Ms. Hobbes' catering company. Ms. Burns was on the schedule and worked 40 hours a week. Ms. Hobbes supplied the van to deliver the food and covered the insurance. Ms. Burns worked Monday to Friday from about 1pm - 8pm most weeks. Ms. Hobbes gave the delivery addresses to Ms. Burns and instructions as to how to set up the food. Ms. Burns had to invoice Ms. Hobbes every 2 weeks and she was paid in cash. No deductions such as income tax were taken off of Ms. Burn's biweekly pay.
1. Ms. Burns has to file her income tax at the end of the year. She comes to your accounting office and asked you to advise her if she would be considered an independent contractor? What would you say?
2. If she is found to be an employee by the Canada Revenue Agency, what are the repercussions for Ms. Hobbes?
