Question 1

One of the most difficult aspects of management is solving disputes. There are a number of companies that fail because they do not have the ability to maintain good employee relationships by using sound resolution processes. The resolution process you learned is: define the problem, gather data, consider alternatives, decide on the best solution, implement the decision.

Required:
a) Define each of the above steps in the resolution process. One mark per definition.
b) Describe how you would complete the "problem definition". Who would you talk to, what professionals, what would be your focus/objective, and why?

Question 2
When you were studying this unit, you learned that there were seven factors affecting decision making including: feelings, structural issues, locus of control, inclination to innovate, managers' innovation approach, authority to decide, and organisational structure.

Required:
a) Briefly define each of the 5 of the 7 factors. One mark for each definition.
b) Which of the factors did you previously utilise when you were making the decision to come to Holmes Institute to study from your home country?

Question 3
The communication model we studied includes the terms "encode" and "decode." These terms are often used to explain that people from diverse cultures do not necessarily readily understand each other, and that words often have different meanings.

Required:
a) Define and give an example for both terms ‘decode' and ‘encode'. Be certain to use examples that you have experienced in Australia.
b) If you are the Receiver of a message, then you have a number of gateways that words flow through. Four of the ones that you studied were: expectations, perceptions, values, norms. Explain what "gateways" the example you gave in Question 1 above passed through before you coded/decoded it?

Question 4
Explain what you think is the source of your culture. Think deeply about your religion, values, understandings, assumptions and goals. Define below where parts of your culture come from and the source of each influence.

Question 5
Multinational enterprises (MNE) are considered to be good for the host countries into which they invest. However, the opposite case is not very often discussed. And it may be that MNEs do not positively impact the entire host country society. What are the reasons that MNEs are thought to be good and/or bad for a host country?
