Case Study: Meet Linda! She has been admitted to the hospital after experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting for 3-4 days. Soci al H i story Linda is a 57-year-old woman who lives in Burnaby, BC with her two dogs. She is divorced with three grown children. She works as a cashier at the Save-on-Foods in her neighbourhood. In her spare time, she enjoys crafts and reading novels. She doesn't get out too much these days as she is concerned about getting COVID. Medi cal H i story Linda suffered with dysmenorrhea for most of her adulthood and had a hysterectomy in 2010 to resolve the symptoms. She was diagnosed with depression in 2016 and was treated with SSRI's. She also had a cholecystectomy in 2020 from which she developed a post-operative infection in her abdomen. She feels that she has never fully recovered from this event. Her family doctor has encouraged her to lose weight and change her diet as her blood pressure tends to beelevated. She has not yet started on anti-hypertensive medications. Recent Events For the last three days, Linda has been experiencing abdominal pain, and nausea and vomiting. She went to see her family doctor, who sent her to the ER for investigations. In the ER her vital signs were: HR = 103 BP = 107/80 RR = 18 Sp02 = 95% on room air Temp = 36.8 She reported abdominal pain at 6/10. She had an abdominal CT with contrast and was diagnosed with a partial small bowel obstruction. She was given a 500ml NS bolus, potassium replacement, and pain medications. She was then admitted to the medical ward under the GI service for bowel rest and symptom control. You are now assigned to care for Linda this morning.
