The Australian Greens have tabled a proposal for a 40% excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in parliament. The stated aim of the proposal is to reduce consumption of SSBs, which are associated with weight gain and diabetes. They have also proposed that the revenue will be used to fund social marketing for healthy foods.
