Assignment:

Read The Sermon on the Mount. After reading, respond to the questions below.

1) What are the parts of the sermon? How is it structured? Why do you think Jesus made each Beatitude a paradoxLinks to an external site. (if you do not know what a paradox is, this is a pretty concise definition: but, trust me when I say that they are crafted as paradoxes)? What is the relationship of the Beatitudes to the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)?

The Beatitudes are a set of teachings given by Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 5:3-12) and also found in a slightly different form in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 6:20-23). The Beatitudes are a series of blessings, each beginning with the phrase "Blessed are the..." and describe the qualities and characteristics that Jesus considers valuable in the Kingdom of God.

2) (Matthew 5:5) How does this sort of gentleness contrast with the world's ideal?

3) Discuss two (2) points of the text that you consider to be the most important or meaningful.

4) What are the main ethical principles and values presented in the Sermon on the Mount? How do concepts such as humility, mercy, and peacemaking challenge conventional societal norms and expectations?

5) Analyze Jesus's statements in the sermon about the Mosaic Law. How does he both affirm and expand upon the law's principles? In what ways does he call for a deeper level of righteousness and understanding?

6) Explore the teachings on interpersonal relationships in the Sermon on the Mount, such as turning the other cheek and loving one's enemies. How do these teachings challenge common notions of justice and retaliation.

7) How does the concept of being "salt and light" (Matthew 5:13-16) reflect the roles and responsibilities of believers within their communities and the broader world?

8) The Sermon on the Mount was written down and preserved for later generations, but it had originally been delivered orally. How might the transformation of the spoken to the written word affect the impact of the original message?
