Overview: This semester, you will build a written portfolio on a pathogen that is currently affecting your selected healthcare field or in biotechnology. Instead of traditional homework questions about the content of the chapter, each module homework assignment will help you build parts of that portfolio.
Instructions: In module #2, we discussed acellular pathogens (viruses, prions, etc.), microbial metabolism and methods of reproduction. For your selected pathogen, research how the microbe survives, what is the mechanism(s) for replication. Answer the following questions to help build a robust background for your pathogen. From this point on, you may use your textbook and only peer-reviewed articles to support your discussion. The National Institute of Health (NIH) has a fantastic (and brief) description of what these are and why they are important → "Peer-Reviewed Literature" by the NIH. Citations must be APA format
Questions: 1. Describe/discuss the pathogenic effects of the pathogen on cells, tissues, and organ systems.
2. What tissues does the pathogen infect?
3. Where (in the body) does the pathogen replicate? Can it replicate outside of the body? If so, where/under what conditions?
4. What are the oxygen requirements for the organism? Can it survive outside a living host? If so, how long?
5. Can the pathogen be studied in vitro, or does it have to be in vivo?
6. Does the microbe produce toxins or induce mechanical damage on cells?
7. Are there any significant, on-going studies to learn more about the pathogen and its methods for replicating inside cells?
