While many film critics have noted the fairly overt critique of xenophobia in District 9, some have criticized the film's portrayal of the "Nigerian" gangs in the township. Due to its relatively strong economy, South Africa has attracted a large number of immigrants from other parts of Africa, including Nigeria and other nations in West Africa. These African immigrants often face resentment from both white and black South Africans who fear they bring crime, disease (AIDS), and other problems with them. Some critics have argued that the portrayal of the Nigerians in District 9 plays into the popular xenophobia directed at African immigrants in South Africa. The Nigerian government went as far as to ban the film because they felt it was insulting.
