Questions: The task here focuses on the workings of Amazon as a TNC, and how the Variety of Capitalism and Variegated Capitalism approaches allow us to understand for differences and similarities for work, employment, HR and labour issues in different countries.
First, provide a general overview of Amazon's strategic operations as a TNC with some focus on its platform. Then reflect on and engage with the contrasting national types of capitalism in the Varieties of Capitalism, or Variegated Capitalism (Dicken), frameworks. Your task is to research and investigate three HRM and/or Employment Relations policies and practices in TWO countries, which may differ or have similarities.
You might select the UK or the US as, respectively an example of an LME (Liberal Market Economy) and Germany or a Scandinavian country, as an example of a CME (Coordinated Market Economy). You do not have to be restricted to this binary for the possibility exists, according to Dicken's Variegated formulation which will be fully explained to you, of selecting authoritarian capitalism (China) or a developing country.
Undertake research and pick three themes or issues, which could be related to labour utilisation (e.g. use of permanent, temporary workers, ZHCs), or HR practices, such as contracts, hours, working conditions, company attitudes and behaviours towards trade unions. To what extent do the institutional/regulatory frameworks at national level impact on Amazon's policies and practices? In what ways does the local qualify the global? Do these policies and practices converge or diverge? What are the national contrasts and similarities?
A summary conclusion should draw the strands together and integrate the evidence and data you have gathered with the themes from and framework of VoC/Variegated Capitalism.
