Interview Assignment on Today's Student

For this assignment you will select either the university where you are currently enrolled as a graduate student (UWA) or the college or university where you are employed and/or serving in an internship or practicum. This assignment has two components.

Component I: Institutional Profile - VIRGINIA COLLEGE (ALABAMA)

Students will research about the institution, student population, and student services at the institution of higher education in order to develop a better understanding of the characteristics of the institution, student services, and student body.

• Briefly describe the institution in terms of: PLEASE BE SURE TO PROVIDE AN ANSWE FOR EACH ONE.

1) institutional type (e.g., public or private, two-year, four-year, historically black college or university, ect.);

2) institutional mission/goals/vision;

3) location;

4) size of student body; and

5) student body demographics (e.g., race/ethnicity, age, international student population, gender, undergraduate v. graduate, etc.)

• List the various student affairs/student services departments that are available for students at the institution.

Component II: Interview with Student Affairs Professional

Next, identify and contact a student affairs professional from one of the departments listed below at this institution in order to conduct a brief phone interview. Please seek to identify a professional who has at least several years of experience working with students at the institution so that he or she will be able to address the interview questions.

(Note: You may need to first contact the office and set an appointment for the phone interview and tell the individual that you are seeking an interview for a class project. Try to be respectful of the professional's time in requesting a 15-20 minute phone interview).

A. Admissions (e.g., First Year Experience, Recruitment, etc.)

Note: Students who wish to select a different student services office must first gain permission from the instructor.

Interview Content:

The goal of the interview is to ask the student services professional what he/she views as the most pressing issues facing today's students on their campus. Also, ask the professional what he or she believes are the most significant differences between students today compared to students from the past two or three decades.

Assignment Format and Guidelines:

Students will report and summarize the information for Components One and Two of this assignment in the form of a powerpoint presentation OR Wiki (you can use wikispaces, which is a free wiki website). The presentation should be a minimum of 12 slides to a maximum of 20 slides with no more than 7 lines of text per slide.

Please use no smaller than a 20 point font.

Presentations should be visually appealing and creative.

Thus, please seek to include images and other forms of media (YouTube clip). (Note: institutions of higher education often have great images and videos on their website). Please make sure you cite the name and title of the individual that you interviewed in your presentation. Lastly, please make sure to include appropriate grammar that is reflective of graduate-level work in your presentation.
