Problem
Jonathan is a sophomore who is about to take BIOL 261+265 in his last semester of lower division in the spring. He has scheduled an advising session with you, his advisor. His three main concerns are; 1. how to satisfy the NAT (nurse aide training) clinical compliance requirement and deadline, 2. the remaining costs for lower/upper division and 3. how to improve his GPA for upper division since his program GPA is currently a 3.05. He says he is happy with all of his grades, with the exception of his three C grades in PSYC 201, CHEM 105, and BIOL 260 lecture (Anatomy & Physiology I). He previously did not pass CHEM 105 and BIOL 260 lecture prior to earning his C grades.
Situation I: Prior to Advising Appointment
A few days prior to the scheduled appointment, Jonathan emails you as his advisor to let you know his concerns so that you can be prepared and see if there is any preliminary information you can send to him.
A. What nursing policies would you need to review that could apply to his situation? Explain how could these affect Jonathan's situation.
B. What are the minimum requirements that Jonathan must meet in order to apply for upper division? Explain how his current GPA could be of concern.
C. What document could you send Jonathan to review prior to his appointment? Explain how you could utilize this document with Jonathan in relation to his GPA.
Situation II: During Advising Appointment
How would you answer his questions during your appointment with him?
A. Explain how he could satisfy the NAT (nurse aide training) clinical compliance requirement and when his deadline would be to finish this requirement. What should he think about regarding planning to meet this requirement?
B. The remaining costs for lower/upper division? Explain what costs he would need to consider during the application process and for clinical compliance requirements. What clinical compliance items could he work on ahead of time?
C. How to improve his GPA for upper division? Explain how you would help him plan future semesters regarding his currently GPA situation.
