Franz Boas was highly critical of the deductive approach of Fraser, Spencer, Morgan, and other 19th century progressive evolutionary theorists for being ethnocentric and advocated instead for the inductive approach he called historical particularism and expected his students to embrace the concept of cultural relativism.
